Getting Your State ID

A state identification (ID) card may serve as a great resource if you don’t or can’t hold a driver’s license. Generally, it will contain your photo, name, address, and date of birth and can be used as “proof of identity.”


It’s important to have some sort of valid, photo ID to prove who you are in numerous situations, which include, but are not limited to:

  • Obtaining employment.
  • Boarding a plane.
  • Establishing bank accounts.
  • Applying for government benefits.
  • Purchasing alcohol and/or cigarettes.

  • Renting an apartment or a home.
  • Buying a home.
  • Applying for a mortgage.
  • Renting, leasing, or buying a vehicle.
  • Getting married.
  • Purchasing a gun.
  • Renting a hotel room.
  • Applying for licenses, such as hunting and fishing.
  • Making certain purchases, such as some medications, paints, and nail polishes.
